The 93rd (Sutherland) Highlanders participated in Sir Colin Campbell's November 1857 expedition to extricate the combined force of Outram, Havelock and Inglis from the expanded Lucknow Residency perimeter, with the object of falling back on Cawnpore.  The 93rd  began the campaign almost a thousand strong and was armed with Enfield rifles, so it was a formidable asset. By the order of Sir Colin the regiment customarily carried its colours cased, though they were sometimes uncased and flourished from a high point to show that a particular enemy strongpoint had fallen. There is a 93rd Regiment flagsheet in our range accordingly.
